The picture below epitomizes the tygpe of day that I have had. Wet muddy and grey. Not that I haven't enjoyed the day. Strangely I find that I have, even though I've been damp for most of it. I have had a long run around, starting near Harrogate then Burton Salmon followed by Carlton store, Wressle, Swanland, of all places and finally Thorganby. Yes perhaps I should have done Thorganby before Swanland  but I didn't so there.  There is still a lot of flood water standing in the usual places but the worst seems to be referring at last. I do sympathise with those who have had their houses inundated, what a terrible way to start the new year. The powers that be may eventually realise that our ancestors didn't spend time and effort keeping the river channels dredged and the banks clear of obstruction for no reason. It's time the Environment Agency became the River Board again and stopped employing university trained brown rivers and goodlifers and went back to employing practical people. The wildlife has survived very well without being flooded out every year, it has coped with well mentioned waterways for the last century or two. Yes I know very well that the water vole has declined drastically in my life time but if animal rights protesters let mink out of fur farms what can we expect! The poor water vole isn't able to cope with the precaution of mink. And as for the poor hedgehog, I expect it to become extinct in the UK. The trouble is that it's natural defence of rolling into a ball doesn't work against badgers. Badgers love eating hedgehog,. Which species do we want, badger or hedgehog? We can't have both, which is a pity as I like to see both. The natural world in all it's glory, of which we are just another part, is cruel and harsh. Nature is the survival of the best survivors and it doesn't care what becomes extinct and that includes us humans. On that note I'll see you tomorrow.
